Red Bush Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea ‘La Jolla’)

Bougainvillea shrubs are known most for their showy flowers and the abundance of flowers that grow around the entire shrub. This shrub is extremely versatile with how it can be used due to the many varieties. It can grow from 1 ft. to up to 20 ft. with support from a trellis. When planted in an area that receives warm sun and at least six hours of sunshine, this shrub will grow quickly. Based on the variety that you plant, you could have white, orange, pink, or magenta flowers to use as accents throughout your yard. In warm climates, like California's, these shrubs never stop blooming so there is year-round color in your landscape.

Since Bougainvilleas like sun, it also needs to get the right amount of water to sustain itself. Once established, this is a very drought tolerant shrub, but still needs a deep watering every few weeks. If you see more leaves and less blooming flowers, you can cut back on how much it is being watered and make sure that your plant is receiving the right amount of sun exposure.

Bougainvillea’s can be pruned lightly a few times during the year, especially if the shrub needs to be trained to grow a specific way in the landscape. The different varieties of this plant allow it to be used in your yard in so many different ways. Due to the eye-catching colors that this plant has to offer, it is a great option to add into your yard for accent colors and texture to contrast existing landscape. This is also a good plant to cover up bare walls or bare areas in your yard. Bougainvillea’s are easily trainable to grow in vine form on trellis’, into a small tree form, or used as a unique and bright privacy hedge. Some varieties of this plant also do well when grown in containers or planting pots in small gardens and patios.

We recommend pairing Bouganvillea La Jolla with plants such as Pittosporum Silver Sheen, Indian Laurel Columns, Fruitless Olive Trees, Japanese Boxwood (Buxus japonica), and a Podocarpus Gracilior hedge or Japanese Blueberry hedge.
