Thornless South American Mesquite - Prosopis hybrid ‘Phoenix’
The Thornless South American Hybrid Mesquite known commonly as Prosopis chilensis and Prosopis alba has been a popular shade tree in the desert, particularly Las Vegas, Phoenix and other desert cities. It is popular because of its thornless, fast-growing, and evergreen nature.
Prosopis X Phoenix® is an improved grafted selection, that has a solid root system and healthier, stronger branches than standard varieties. Its lush airy canopy is excellent for providing filtered shade in hot, dry climates.
Prosopis do well with a deep watering schedule during the first growing season to encourage deep rooting and limited water thereafter to moderate growth and encourage healthy branch structure.
Prosopis can reach a mature size of 30 feet tall and wide. In low deserts it is semi-evergreen, with lush green compound leaves. It is reliably cold hardy to 10° F.
